Background and location
The Youth Centre Anjala is located in the city of Anjalankoski, only one and a half hours drive away from the Helsinki region. The centre is situated in a scenic and historical place by the River Kymijoki. Anjala Manor and the Natural Resources Unit of Kouvola Region Vocational College share the same courtyard with the Youth Centre.
Services
Anjala provides accommodation for 92 people which can be lodged in comfortable rooms of 12 persons. The rooms contain four bedrooms for three, a common room, a mini-kitchen and lavatory and shower facilities. The rooms have been well equipped: each room has a TV, a microwave oven, a refrigerator and tableware for 12 as well as a coffee maker. All of the rooms are non-smoking. One of the rooms is suitable for disabled persons. The Anjala kitchen is well-known for its tasty meals and the hundred-seater dining room is an excellent place for organizing different types of parties and celebrations. The area also contains a hut instinct with feeling, which offers great possibilities for alternative dining. In the hut you can enjoy a delicious meal of flamed salmon while sitting on reindeer skin by the blazing open fire. During summer time, the beautiful and historical storehouse café is held open. Its sunny terrace offers refreshment not only to the youngsters participating in camp schools but also to tourists. In addition, two cosy conference rooms, Matilda (for 35 persons) and Katariina (for 24 persons), are available at the Anjala Youth Centre. Also, facilities for bigger groups are available. Recreational possibilities in the area include a gym, an arts and crafts room, nature trails, a green for ball games, a swimming bond one kilometre from the centre and ski tracks approximately two kilometres from the centre. Moreover, bicycles, outdoor and indoor equipment, snowshoes, kick sleds and camping equipment are accessible to guests. Anjala offers its guests versatile programme services, for example: we may start our day by paddling down the river Kymijoki, in an obstacle course or perhaps by abseiling the 12-metre-high Kirkkovuori rock. Then, we might continue our day by going swimming by bikes or with activities such as archery, crate climbing or Camp Olympics, including e.g. milk cart rally. In the winter our activities include kick sled relay and tandem skiing, walking with snowshoes and, as a culmination for the day, luge racing down a natural course with speed up to 40 km/h. Learning wilderness skills helps you when hiking outdoors. The skills entail for example lighting a fire, crossing a body of water and making a stretcher. Fishing, nature trails and different kinds of treks out in the wild are also part of the camp schools' programme. At the end of the day, we will meet at the hut to enjoy the rest of the evening by the blazing fire. When practising arts and crafts, creativity will be let loose. Gift boxes and bags will be made out of self-dyed paper. In addition, each person will get their own printed camp T-shirt; and oven gloves will be felted, candles will be moulded and recycled paper will be made.
